I arrived at the first protest around 4:55. Everyone was trickling in and it had a great energy. People were sharing cardboard, markers, sunscreen, etc. We began marching north on Clinton maybe around 6:15/6:30. This was the only time I saw officers. They were in the street on Clinton. Between Main and Superior: they didn’t speak to protestors and were having a conversation with themselves. Upon return we kneeled near Berry. The energy was still great. There was no violence or destruction. We marched out again to the bridge and back. This time when we returned, we lingered in the intersection of Main. Cars trickled through the intersection. Everyone was still chanting and energized. Still nothing was vandalized. I saw an elderly couple probably 70+ years old. The wife took a knee in the intersection, the husband apologized that he wasn’t physically capable. My friend left. Still we changed and pulled out fists and held our signs. Cars trickled through. It began to rain. I moved to the sidewalk trying to decide whether to stay or go. Mobs came running. SWAT came south on Clinton and pepper sprayed anyone on the sidewalk. No warning. Tear gas was shot. No warning. People ran. Some stayed and kneeled in the street. SWAT moved closer. Never any warnings. I checked on those near me. People rinsed each other’s eyes at the corner near the Hoppy Gnome and around the corner. Then they would return to the line applying pressure to SWAT. SWAT would repeatedly tear gas again and again. Around 8:45/ maybe 9:00 I returned to my vehicle on Berry and Barr and joined the line of traffic on Berry. At this point SWAT was trying to push forward and a lot of pepper spray was being used. I have a soft top. The pepper spray was seeping in, not terribly, but I did cough my entire drive home.
