My friends and I were participating in protests on the second day (May 30th). The event started around 2pm and was going fantastic, good energy, good community, and absolutely no violence. Not a single person had a weapon, and everyone was wearing face masks to still adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines. Police were already set before we even got there making perimeters around the courthouse. There were already SWAT trucks set up. This immediately struck me as absolutely unnecessary and a show of their dominance, even though there had been no reason given to incite that type of intimidation. Around 5:30pm people began moving towards the MLK bridge to participate in a march, the police however blocked us off which invited the protesters to get upset. Not a single act of violence was committed. Verbal slurs and empty water bottles were thrown around, which was then used as an excuse for the FWPD to aggressively move in on the crowd. If a water bottle is a justifiable reason for police to attack unarmed civilians then that is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE.
The FWPD began releasing tear gas canisters at face level and over the head, as opposed to be being pointed at the ground how they are suppose to be. My friends and I were sitting on the grass in front of the courthouse, I had just sat down to eat a snack. We had a canister come in over our heads and land roughly 5 feet away from where we were sitting. We were right next to the police line and were told that if we did not move then we would be arrested. For absolutely no justifiable reason other then they did not want us there anymore. The police used force, intimidation, and weapons on the citizens to clear the square. We were then trapped up against a block of buildings where the police created a barrier around us, people who tried leave were sprayed with mace. We were trapped and being told to clear out at the same time.
Later that night the March went to the MLK bridge where police officers yet again trapped people from all sides without warning, firing teargas and mace to blind and confuse the citizens. Many were arrested for simply being in the area and having no where to get away. Again, not a single person was carrying firearms, weapons, or posed a threat. We were armed with cardboard signs, words, and water bottles, and that was the FWPD’s excuse to use military grade force on us. I am traumatized from my experience and I am angry. This behavior has no justification. It is a disgrace to humanity. The FWPD needs to be punished, held accountable, and defunded.
