On Friday the 29th, I walked up Clinton Street to find a beautiful, massive protest being held at the courthouse. So much culture and passion being shown by the people of Fort Wayne, most were youth ages 18 to 30. So proud of my city as I walked up Clinton from MLK bridge. I saw zero police or anyone other than the 10 Point Coalition assisting with the traffic that was backed up due to deliveries of water and others who stopped their car in traffic to show support of the cause. 10 Point Members in the neon vests were directing traffic behind the art building and down Superior Ave. Once I got to the corner of Main and Clinton I saw so many protesters on the sidewalks showing support and flashing their signs. I had enough time to walk across the street to the courthouse lawn and join the chanting when it happened. Without warning or a sound the first of the gas canisters were launched. In my life, I have never experienced something so terrifying as a massive wave of people running from the deadly gas being sent in a mass toward us on the courthouse lawn which I had assumed was a public, safe space. That was not the case. After exploding the Clinton main intersection with the deadly gas, armed units in full military riot gear walked up and then blocked traffic and moved toward the courthouse down Clinton, while gassing and pushing all protesters further back down Berry and other side streets. We found our way down the back alleys and to safety on Fairfield.
On Saturday, I went with a party of 3 to the protests. We met on the MLK bridge. We listened to inspirational speakers and chanted with the protesters. Then we marched down 4th Street and up Spy Run. The traffic seemed to honk in solidarity with the movement. The crowd then turned on Berry and hit a wall of the same military style riot units in full gear and with guns ready at the Berry-Clinton intersection. The protesting and chanting continued. After maybe 10 minutes of this the military riot units started to use gas and excessive force to push back the protestors, including deadly gas at very lethal range. In an attempt to scatter the protestors and without warning, again filled the entire area of Berry and the Citizen Square parking lot with deadly gas. Eventually the crowd backed up to the history museum and the Barr Street Market where the officers drove incredibly fast down the alley and jumped out of the cars shooting rubber bullets and tackling anyone in sight. My party ran in front of Citizen Square building, but upon looking back there was a young girl having an intense seizure, so we stopped and began yelling for a medic. Some protestors came over to help, but the police ignored our calls for help. We left down Wayne Street after some medical protestors had gotten the girl. After taking alleys away from the courthouse we made it back around to the MLK bridge where many protestors had escaped to. Once on the bridge we begin chanting and protesting for BLM and the police brutality we had experienced. After maybe 30 minutes of peaceful protests a few FWPD squad cars rushed through the crowd, luckily not hitting anyone. And then from north Clinton by Science Central a SWAT military vehicle joined them making a wall, and with the use of tear gas and rubber bullets they shot and blasted the protesters until there was enough to arrest. I ran away to find shelter from the assault.
On Sunday the FWPD came out and blamed state police for the brutal assault on the people of our city and tried to “buddy buddy” with the protestors in a PR stunt that landed them a unity march which showed the privileged people that everything was okay. It is not okay. Just today, June 6, 2020, multiple protestors were maliciously hunted down by police and kidnap-style thrown into squad cars and hauled off. Yesterday, there were videos of civilians being hunted into local buildings by military style riot units with rifles. Then flushed out of said buildings and shot at until they ran away. The mayor praised the police using deadly gas and the level of force used to assault the citizens.
