We went on the first night of the protests (Friday night). We were there for several hours. For the most part we kept it peaceful, the only thing we did was jumping in the streets and obstructing traffic. They are trying to blame people for getting on cars, but we didn’t even do that. The only thing people did was climb onto a semi that the driver gave explicit permission to do so. After an hour or two, the police showed up and began tear gassing with absolutely no warning. There was never a time we heard “Leave” or “Disperse”. They gave us no warning before they shot tear gas at us. There were children in the crowd.
We left and came back a few hours later with the intent to provide first aid for those that were still downtown protesting. We were carrying water and milk for the tear gas, and first aid for the rubber bullets. We were yelling “first aid” away from the front lines of the protest. No one told us to leave or that it was unlawful to be there, but the police began throwing tear gas in our direction, even though we were no where near the police lines and were not posing any threats.
They began closing us in, and when we tried to leave, it was incredibly difficult. They wouldn’t tell us where to go. They wouldn’t give us any information. All they did was keep telling us, everywhere we went, that we had to find a different way. When we finally did, what we saw was several corners where police were standing, and standing with them with assault rifles were people waving American flags with Trump stickers and Confederate flags. We assumed they were white counter-protesters. They each had assault rifles. They were posing a real and imminent threat, yet the police were standing WITH them. They were okay to stand with white nationalists, but were tear gassing us.
